OUR STORY

A Canberra-Based Community Language School

Canberra Chinese School was founded in 2016. We are a high-quality, not-for-profit community language school with three campuses in Belconnen, Woden and Gungahlin. Classes are held on Saturdays and Sundays.

Our motto is “Learn Chinese the fastest and best way.” We offer three programs: Kindy for children aged five; Ma Liping Chinese for children aged six and over who can already speak and understand Mandarin; and Bilingual Chinese for children aged six and over who do not yet speak or understand Mandarin.

Our Goal
We make learning lively, enjoyable and effective. We help students develop their Chinese listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while discovering the richness of Chinese culture.

Ma Liping Chinese Class Teaching Methods

We use the Ma Liping Chinese textbook series, developed by Chinese education specialist Dr Liping Ma in the United States for Chinese heritage children living overseas.

  • Communication first: listening, speaking and reading are the main focus, with writing as a secondary focus
  • Engaging learning: lively lessons and interesting homework keep students involved
  • Experienced teachers: our teachers receive systematic program training
  • Strong progress: students can develop basic reading skills in approximately four years

About the Textbooks

Bilingual Chinese Class Teaching Methods

We use the Chinese Made Easy for Kids series, published by Joint Publishing (Hong Kong) and widely used around the world to teach Chinese to children.

  • Fun and accessible: lessons are taught in both English and Chinese
  • Everyday communication: students develop practical listening and speaking skills
  • 500 characters: students learn approximately 500 Chinese characters after completing four books
  • Future pathways: the program helps students prepare for future IB Chinese courses
